THE FREEDOM TRAIL
-Park Street Church
**The
elegant church's, which sounds twice daily, have long been landmarks for Boston's downtown area. The hymn "America"
was first sung here, and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison gave his first
antislavery speech here in 1829. Gunpowder was stored in the church's basement during the War of 1812. Park Street
Church was built in 1809 as a Congregational church, organized in reaction
to Unitarians who were gaining control in many of the old Puritan churches.
